Considerations for Cosmetic Labels

Nov 17, 2021

Cosmetic product labels have become an integral marketing element for beauty and cosmetic products, whose popularity has been dramatically growing in the past few years. Of course, that doesn’t mean that just anyone can launch their own beauty products, the packaging and labels used in your cosmetic products need to work with current legal requirements that also entice your intended audience to be able to create a successful beauty brand.

Choose Labels that Attract the Right Demographic

Cosmetics often need to sell themselves as a luxury good, working to market them as a completely unique product. This requires great branding, quality components, and creating an appealing visual experience for your customers.

Before you even start thinking about your product labels you need to consider who your customer is and how you can appeal to their wants and needs. By identifying the exact demographic, you can design unique labels and packaging concepts that will successfully grab their attention while still focusing on your brand’s identity. Underlining this important element will ensure that you’re able to create a label design that your customers will want to show off and will value aesthetically.

Choose the Right Packing for Your Product

Anyone who’s ever browsed makeup and beauty care products in pharmacies or grocery stores knows just how much variety is available in terms of packaging and labelling. There are boxes, bottles, tins, tubes, jars, pumps, compacts, palettes, packets, and more. You’ll need to determine which method will serve your products the best whilst also being labelled correctly.

The packing you choose should ensure simple use for your customers. Working to incorporate industry compliance and customer preferences through your cosmetic products packaging can ensure that not only does your product look good but it also works functionally when used.

You should also think about how your chosen packaging will impact or limit the space your label will take up. The labels often need to cleanly wrap around a container. Other fronts- and back-facing labels should mirror the outline of the container’s shape. If you have a small circular bottle then you’ll want to make sure that the label design you choose isn’t visually cut off the sides on a shelf.

Label Considerations

Durability is the most important feature to consider in the production of your cosmetic and beauty product labels. Many labels need to stick directly onto cosmetic containers and need to last the lifetime of the product, with other labels needing tamper-evident features.

The label material and adhesive you use will need to be waterproof, even if your product isn’t used in wet settings (like showers) it will be stored in bathrooms where water contact is inevitable. Many cosmetic and beauty products will also contain alcohols and oils which can remove ink from your labels. By choosing the right label material you can ensure that your label and its information is clear no matter how old or messy the packaging may get.

Required Labelling Information

Many cosmetics toe the line between pharmaceutical and consumable products. Their labels need to include details such as ingredients, directions, and safety cautions and warnings. Organic and fair-trade products carry their own labelling considerations.
