Required Information You have to Display on Food & Cosmetic Labels

An unattractive label is not a good look for food or cosmetic product labels. While labels provide and display essential information for your consumers, it also impacts your marketing and brand reputation. Labels that work well and stand out from the rest have been designed with aesthetics in mind and clearly state all the legally required info.
Information Needed Within Food Labels?
Food labels are an essential element to include in the disruption of your products. This information can help protect public health and safety by displaying information and warning statements, and warnings of major allergy concerns.
Your label will also allow customers to compare multiple products to help reveal the right choice for their needs and provide when to use it by, how to store, prepare it, what it’s made of and more.
Here are nine compulsory bits of information that are required by law on every food pack in New Zealand:
- Description or technical name of the food or drink (not the brand).
- Net weight or volume – the amount of food or drink without the weight of the packaging
- Date mark – this includes ‘Best-Before’ and ‘Use-By’ dates or a ‘Baked-On’ date for bread.
- Ingredient list, including additives.
- Nutrition information panel.
- Allergy warning or allergen declaration.
- Name and address of manufacturer, distributor or importer.
- Storage Instructions, e.g. keep refrigerated at 4°C.
- Lot or batch number.
From the 12th of February 2022, some food labels require information on their country of origin. This will apply to any regulated food items, including cured pork, fruits, vegetables, meats, finfish and shellfish that are packaged in one variety, available fresh, thawed or frozen, and are no more than minimally processed.
Information Needed Within Cosmetic Labels?
A label design that doesn’t follow the rules won’t do your products any good. Instead, it will make your brand vulnerable to customer dissatisfaction and incidents created by misinformed customers.
Cosmetic product labels help consumers avoid ingredients they’re allergic to and help them make a more informed decision before purchase, allowing them to see which components are used (which is especially important for skincare products).
Here are the compulsory requirements for all cosmetic products:
- Name and place of business – Include the street address, city, state, and ZIP Code for the manufacturer, packer, or distributor
- Distributor statement – Must say “Manufactured for…” or “Distributed by…,” or similar wording if the name and address are not those of the manufacturer
- Material facts – An accurate list of all materials included in the product
- Warning and caution statements – Prominent and conspicuous statements related to specific products, such as for cosmetics that may be hazardous to consumers
- Ingredients – Ingredients must appear on an information panel, in descending order of predominance
You can also add information like a use-by date and other claims like organic, vegan, cruelty-free, alcohol-free or hypoallergenic elements. These will further help your customers choose your products against your competitors.
